Stockholm Design Week: Ung Svensk Form/Young Swedish Design 2020

4 February - 22 March

Stockholm Design Week is an opportunity to discover the most exciting new work by emerging designers in Sweden. Young Swedish Design 2020 features unique works from a number of disciplines, from product design to fashion and furniture. This exhibition provides a window to the near and far future and provides a platform for young designers to showcase their ideas. Understand what is happening on the young design scene in Sweden today.

Meet 29 young creators. Although each designer has their own unique language, they all use the present day as their starting point, be this in the form of criticism of conventions, the disruption of trends, or the climate.

This year’s edition of Ung Svensk Form offers the audience a thought-provoking and sensational journey into the borderland between utopia and dystopia. Perhaps this is the most conceptual round of Ung Svensk Form since the project started in Malmö in 1998. It is obvious that the need to comment on both present and future phenomena is strong whether it is furniture design, visual communication or speculative design says Mats Widbom, CEO of Svensk Form and member of the jury.

The works almost all have in common an engagement with the largest and most complex dynamics affecting human society today. Environmental crisis and the end of fossil fuels are visible in the attempts of various works in the show to use or even invent sustainable and innovative materials. It is also clear in the show that design schools in Sweden today are deeply engaged with contemporary political trends. Works about questions of identity, femininity and masculinity, queerness, sex and the body are throughout the exhibition”, says Kieran Long, Director of ArkDes.

Ung Svensk Form will be shown in ArkDes exhibition space Boxen. Boxen provides space for alternative voices to inspire discussions about architecture, design, and their relationship to society. Dehlin Brattgård Arkitekter — one of Sweden’s most exciting emerging practices—have designed a structure that, through its architecture, creates a transformative experience both inside and around it.

Dehlin Brattgård Arkitekter— one of Sweden’s most exciting emerging practices—have designed a structure that, through its architecture, creates a transformative experience both inside and around it. Steel, birch plywood, and wire mesh combine to create two distinct exhibitable environments: an interior white-box and a circulatory ramp, encouraging multiple views and perspectives between both visitors and the ideas on display.
